Another year has flown right on by me. 30 years ago, I thought for sure, by now, we would have flying cars. I never imagined who or what I would be at 41. When you're a kid, 41 seems so old. I started playing word games to promote brain health. I'm sure I've done enough damage to it when I was in my 20's and 30's! Today, I celebrated myself by going to the gym. Now, if I can only make it a ritual.

A short trip to Grabill, Indiana was on our list this morning. Our first adventure was Catalpa Tree Shops. I can never get enough of this store. You need a good few hours to see everything. Catalpa is a treat of many metaphysical flavors.

2011, The Year of The House!

Yes! Husband said it. I heard him. "2011, will be the year of the house". We purchased our craftsman home in 1997. We had only been married less than two years when we made a crazy purchase. Our stucco home was built in 1915. It had really cool features like stucco, kick ass fireplace, tiny kitchen with a vintage sink that seemed charming at the time. We couldn't beat the price. We were in our 20's and thought we needed to buy a house. It wasn't a crazy idea. Cheaper than rent but the kitchen sucked and I never felt safe using the beautiful, fieldstone fireplace. So now, 13 + years later, we are going to fix it, love it, give it the attention she so deserves. Have you seen our back yard? We have a nice back yard. Well, now it's time to make the inside shine! We pulled the carpet up (brand new when we first moved it) many moons ago after I've accidently dumped green paint, orange paint, purple paint and some shades of red. Painting every few years keeps it interesting. Several years ago I started repainting the walls white. Now, I'm ready to do the same with the floors. It's a lovely look, goes with my decor and cheaper than carpet. Now, if I can only convince Dan. I found these lovely photos off of many blogs that I forgot to note. Hope they don't sue! I need to save my money for my house.

I'm ready to leave 2010 in the dust. It has not been one of my better years. Illness x many, falling down the stairs x 2 and feeling scattered most of the year has me welcoming 2011 with wide open arms. 2010 didn't totally suck. It was a good year for Dan. He went full-time as a city gardener (thank you, sweet Jesus & Buddha). He's worked hard to get that position and loves his job. My 40th birthday is right around the corner. Where the hell did that come from is what I want to know. Geesh. So, here's to good birthdays and a brighter year!!

I melted two bags of dark chocolate and spread the mess on parchment paper in a 9 x 13 dish. I added dried cherries, blueberries and cranberries. I then threw in pistachios and almonds for kicks. Sprinkled sea salt on top for added richness! After the batch cooled, I cut into squares. Big hit with the husband.

Lessons from fruit

Over the weekend, a virus of sorts found it's way into my ears, head and throat. I blamed the weather, the trees and other various blooming plants. I take care of sick people for a living and this care-taker is never sick. Here I sit at home, coughing, sneezing, moaning and sleeping. On the upside, I've lost 5 pounds. I've discovered that I like fruit when I'm sick!! My mom will tell you that she couldn't get me to eat a piece of stinking fruit since I was a kid. I've tried so many times to enjoy a piece of fruit. I have a freezer full of fruit that I stocked up on months ago, thinking that fruit may be the answer to weight loss. I was somewhat right. Well, that and a splitting headache doesn't do much for the appetite.

I want to ride it where I like!

Stay in a state of gratitude, and let the awesome yet unexplainable Tao proceed to do nothing and yet leave nothing undone. Rather than asking for more—which implies shortages and, therefore, creates a vibrational match to more shortages—focus on what you have and how thankful you are for everything that has shown up in your life.
To that end, keep in mind a “happiness index” that was recently taken for different countries around the world. It turns out that Nigeria, which is one of the poorest of nations, with the least modern of conveniences, came in at number one for reports of happiness among the people there. The U.S. ranked 46 out of 50, despite having one of the highest standards of living in the world. Apparently, the emphasis in Nigeria isn’t on the mantra of the ego, which demands more, more, more. Emphasizing needing more has built within it the idea of shortage, lack, and I don’t have enough. Consequently, when you think more, you become a vibrational match to experiencing more shortage in your life . . . like it or not!

Dan scored some free tickets to the Rv & camper show. I was stoked, hoping to see a silver bullet or some kind of funky modern pop-up. I do love to camp. Something about sleeping in the wilderness after a day of hiking and sitting around a fire frees my soul.

Had we been in the market to make a near-future purchase, I really would have been disappointed. For now, it's a 2 person tent for us with room for our dog.

Today is my 39th birthday! I had a glorious weekend and time well spent with Dan. Friday, we went sledding at Franke Park. Man, was that a hill. I spent part of Saturday and Sunday laying in bed, healing these old bones. I don't remember sledding being painful! : )

Not only have I been thinking about New Year's resolutions but praying, meditating and making a mental list of how to be kinder to myself. This weekend was also spent at the gym working out and healing these strained muscles and mind in the hot sauna. For the first time in years, I actually enjoyed working out. I have alot to acomplish in my life and want to be sure I'm here for it all.

Tomorrow, we will celebrate being married for 14 years. During those 14 years, we've buried friends, family and beloved pets. Dan discovered he has a son, who is now 22 years old. I've become a nurse and Dan has returned to school. I've discovered many things about myself during these 14 years and one of them is that I love being married. I am smarter, wiser and a better person for marrying this man.

Spring is a favorite season. To me it means new life, new growth and new beginnings. I have a bit of a green thumb but have not had much luck with orchids. My Grandma Ruby died March 13 this year and I was lucky enough to be given several of her plants. I decided to put the orchid in the sun room which gets wonderful indirect sunlight. I'm so excited to write that she has buds!! Now, if only I patiently wait for the arrival of her blooms, I'll be in orchid heaven.

Trendir Modern House Designs

Nature with architecture is not an odd pairing by any means, but it’s never been done quite like this. But another factor plays heavily on this contemporary, flowing style – music. Architect Robert Harvey Oshatz has created this awesome, artistic piece of architecture in the woods of Portland, Oregon, for a client who’s love of music would be translated into a modern home. This impressive design was seven years in the making, from the drawing board to its completion in 2004, and it was worth every last second of the wait. The main living level of this contemporary tree house sits in the canopy, among lush green leaves with the dewy earth rolling out below. It’s one of those designs that’s difficult to describe. According to the architect, “One has to actually stroll through the house to capture its complexities and its connection to the exterior with the use of a natural wood ceiling floating on curving laminated wood beams which pass through a generous glass wall which wraps around the main living room.” Architect Robert Harvey Oshatz.

I had a patient who successfully finished her rehab and was discharged to her home. I was her nurse for several weeks on 3rd shift. Her last night as my patient, she presented my with a poem that she wrote when she was 12 years old. It's times like these that I know I made the right career decision.

Byline: Cindy Larson --It's a sure sign of spring -- the Southside Farmers Market will open for the season April 11 at 3300 Warsaw St. The market, now in its 83rd year, features locally grown fruits, vegetables, herbs and bedding plants in season. Some are organic or naturally grown. Flea-market vendors and book dealers also are at the market, and a food stand is open for breakfast. Fresh meat and eggs are available on most days. Some vendors participate in the Women, Infants and Children voucher program. The market is open 7 a.m.-1 p.m. every Saturday until Nov. 17. Starting in May, the market invites musicians to come and jam on the first and third Saturdays of the month.

Today, Dan and I drove to see my parents and took a detour on the way home. The photos only show a glimpse of the flooding Northern Allen County is experiencing. Thank goodness the water is receding. Maybe this will be a good planting season for farmers- cross your fingers.

I could smell it in the air today! Spring! The birds were going nuts today. Chirping like mad. It was a wonderful sound. I can't wait for the grass to turn green, trees to bud and to ride my bike like I don't have a care in the world. The South Side Farmer's Market opens in April. Looking forward to baby greens and peas. Can't wait.

This quote caught my eye today. Couldn't have come at a better time. My 95 year old grandma Ruby's health is rapidly declining. Each time I see her, I witness the gleam in her eye slowly fading. This is a strong soul who became a widow in her 20's, raised two children on her own. Her oldest, who is my mother, became ill with polio as a young child. My grandma never complained about the hand she was dealt. She loved her children as a mother does and worked hard to support them. I've only ever known my grandma to be kind, thoughtful, gracious, tactful and a most loving woman. I have many lessons to learn from her. As I look at her 100 pound body inflicted with pain, I see beauty but also sadness as I know I won't have much time left with her.

I'm not in the habit of making a new year's resolution but how can I not with so much uncertainty in this world. This year, I want to be smarter, thinner, healthier and so many more things. How can I improve my tiny world? I know that I will surround myself with good people, talented and caring friends. I'm on holiday until Wednesday night and I must return to work with a refreshed, positive, healthy spirit and mind. I must remind myself everyday of Gandhi's famous quote, "Be the change you want to see in the world."

Empress Theodora was one of the most influential and powerful women in the Early Middle Ages. She was the wife of Emperor Justinian I and joint ruler of the Byzantine Empire.
Prior to her marriage to Justinian, Theodora had been an actress and she entertained at banquets for nobles. She also became a courtesan to many of the nobles she entertained. She later converted to Monophysite Christianity and gave up her former lifestyle. She married Justinian in either 523 AD or 525 AD and following the death of Emperor Justin I in 527 AD, both Justinian I and Theodora took control of the empire. Many decisions concerning the government were made by Theodora. For example, 532 AD, resentment over high taxes, religious controversy, and political corruption led to the Nika riot in Constantinople. Fearing for his life, Justinian, tried to flee the city. Theodora intervened and was able to convince her husband to stay. With Theodora’s support, Justinian was able to successfully crush the revolt.
Theodora participated in making Constantinople one of the world’s most sophisticated cities and promoting women’s rights. She had bridges, aqueducts, and churches built. One such building, the Hagia Sophia, built between 532 AD and 537 AD, is considered one of the greatest examples of Byzantine architecture. She had laws passed that prohibited forced prostitution and closed brothels. Theodora also gave women more rights in divorce and property ownership. She gave mothers guardianship of their children, instilled a death penalty for rape, and forbade the killing of a wife who committed adultery.
Theodora died from cancer on June 28, 548 AD She and Justinian are both considered saints by the East Orthodox Church.

Bring it on 2009! As I stand strong facing my 38th birthday next weekend I remind myself of how I thought 38 was old once upon a time! Sure I'd love to get a "do-over" for pretty much most of my teen years and hell, my 20's also. I wouldn't change who I married nor the friends I spend my time with. When you spend time with quality people, you realize that it's okay to dump a friend or two along the way who really are not good for your soul. With age comes confidence- confidence to speak your mind but with grace and tact (or at least I try). I spent most of my 20's with my foot in my mouth and it's taken most of my 30's to learn not to!

These times are tough and I see many hurt people. Many feel hopeless as more and more lose their jobs, health insurance and their homes. Medicare and Medicaid I fear will be more limited and unfortunate changes may be on the way that effect the sick and the elderly.

This was the most exciting election many of us of witnessed. I am hopeful that the culturally diverse cabinet members will bring new ideas and guidance to Washington. God Bless Obama!
